Merchant figure from a Chinese tomb
Tang Dynasty, circa 750 AD
Terracotta
Height: 46.4 cm
This terracotta funerary statuette, made of fired clay and painted, represents a Near Eastern merchant-perhaps of carpets, or even of horses since his right arm is raised to grasp a bridle. Because of the exaggerated western physiognomy, it has been suggested that Freud perhaps believed the subject to be a Jew.
