    Imhotep Imhotep, the deified vizier of the Egyptian King Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty (circa 2650 BC), is best known today as the architect of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, the world's first large-scale stone building. During the later periods of Egyptian history, Imhotep was worshipped as a sage, a healer and a magician, and shrines were erected to his memory in temples at Philae, Thebes, Saqqara and elsewhere. With the arrival of the Greeks in Egypt, he came to be associated with Asklepios, the classical god of medicine; this figure was perhaps presented at his shrine by a pilgrim seeking relief from illness or offering thanks for recovery. Freud may have especially favoured this figure because of Asklepios' association with the healing power of dreams.
