  • Amon-Re
Amon-Re The meaning of the Egyptian name Amun, `the hidden one', conveys something of the god's universal and all-pervading nature. His elevation to the status of king of the gods occurred during the Middle Kingdom (circa 1950 BC); the deity's prestige was further increased during the New Kingdom by his association with the sun-god Re, and by the time of the Greeks Amon-Re was identified with Zeus. This particular image of the god, solid cast in bronze, is among the pantheon decorating Freud's desk-top. Its influence on Freud may be seen in the first essay of `Moses and Monotheism' (SE, 23, pp. 1-137).
