Between the 9th and the 8th centuries BC, this type of object, carved in the form of a bowl supported by a hand, was common in the Near East where some 200 examples have been recorded. The precise function of such pieces is unknown-the more recent label `offering spoon' is perhaps preferable to the earlier identification as `incense burner'.
