Environment Management System

At a time when environmental problems such as global warming and threats to biodiversity are reaching critical levels, Kajima is continuously seeking to contribute in whatever ways it can to address the issues of the day and offer solutions. By constructing buildings that consume less energy, designing urban spaces in harmony with biodiversity, and helping build a society that recycles resources and energy, Kajima is creating quality assets—valuable in both tangible and intangible terms—to pass on to the next generation.

Environmental Policy

As a member of the construction industry—an industry entrusted with the responsibility for development of public infrastructure—Kajima considers environmental issues from both a regional and global perspective, contributing by reducing the adverse environmental impact of its business activities, and working to realize a sustainable society in which economic activities and environmental conservation are consistently pursued. Moreover, we engage in broad-based environmental communication within the Company and with the public, including information disclosure.

  1. We endeavor to prevent pollution from business activities and engage in the recycling and effective utilization of resources, the control of hazardous materials, the prevention of global warming, and conservation of ecosystems throughout the entire life-cycle of buildings.
  2. We promote the development of technologies that contribute to environmental conservation and engage in environmental creation businesses.

Environmental Management

The construction industry is unique for its consumption of large amounts of resources, the long-term usage of its products, namely buildings, and its direct alteration of the natural environment. Taking these aspects into consideration, Kajima set up an environmental management system based on ISO 14001 in 1997.

Kajima integrated the system company-wide in 2003, and since then has continued to carry out environmental activities under the four priority issues of combating global warming, resource recycling and effective use, hazardous substance management, and promotion of ecosystem-friendly construction.

Fiscal 2009–2011 Medium-Term Environmental Targets

Recognizing the need for better-managed and integrated environmental activities for a sustainable society, Kajima strengthened its environmental approach with the establishment of new medium-term goals covering the period from fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2011.

Beginning with the first priority issue of combating global warming, Kajima aims to reduce CO2 emissions on a lifecycle basis by 30% by fiscal 2011 compared to the fiscal 1990 level, and intends to achieve this target through designing buildings that save energy. With the goal to achieve a 50% reduction in total CO2 emissions from construction by 2020 compared to the fiscal 1990 level, Kajima has established a target to reduce total emissions by 41% by fiscal 2011.

Turning to other priority issues, Kajima is aiming to be the driving force in the construction industry for promoting urban development that considers biodiversity. Furthermore, the company has taken up the challenge to lower its final disposal rate of waste from construction to under 5%, and is making determined efforts to investigate and take measures against soil contamination, including soil damage from natural sources.
