Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Technology

Aiming to accelerate tunnel construction work, Kajima has made active use of new TBM technology. The Company currently holds the world record for speed in boring tunnels in the four- and five-meter diameter classes.

Kajima's TBM technology has a number of distinctive characteristics. With the goal of maintaining stable boring work despite the complicated geological structures often encountered in Japan, the Company has devised advanced ground-structure sensing mechanisms and installed them on its boring machines. The Company has also developed and applied systems for the real-time monitoring of its machines' forward progress, position, and route as well as operational conditions of the TBM.

Soil Remediation Technology

The growing incidence in Japan of severe soil and groundwater contamination has become a significant factor impeding land development. Having started to address this problem some time ago, Kajima has developed numerous technologies for investigating and effectively rectifying problems involving such contaminants as volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and oil. The above illustration shows a soil washing and bioremediation process for oil contamination. The soil washing involves the employment of tiny bubbles to suspend and isolate the oil. This process is highly effective even in the case of hard-to-remediate contamination with heavy oil. Because the relevant soil, oil, and wash water can all be reused immediately after their separation, this process has been highly evaluated.

Frequency-Selective Electromagnetic Shield Glass

The rising use in offices of such equipment as local cordless phones and wireless LAN systems has given rise to problematic situations involving radio interference as well as security issues stemming from the leakage of signals to outside the relevant building. These problems can be solved by electromagnetically shielding entire buildings or individual rooms. Kajima has developed frequency-selective electromagnetic glass that blocks only the electromagnetic wave frequencies in question and is therefore ideal for shielding applications. This new type of glass features excellent transparency as well as guaranteed shielding performance.
