Kajima's Architectural and Engineering Design
Division offers a global design service in many fields associated
with construction marketing and design. It works in close affiliation
with locally incorporated design offices in the United States,
Europe and Asia; Kajima Associates, Inc. (KAI), Kajima Design
Europe Ltd. (KDE), and Kajima Design Asia Pte. Ltd. (KDA).
On the domestic front, the division is achieving operational efficiencies
through collaborative relationships with Ilya Corporation, specialists
in interior design, and Armo Architects & Engineers, specialists
in presentations and drafting.
In 2001 the division was awarded 740 design commissions (for a
total construction value of
415.8 billion), and delivered consultancy services on 959 projects.
Major design projects included construction management of three
skyscrapers on redeveloped land in Shiodome in Tokyo, the Kajima
Tower complex (38 floors), incorporating offices and a city hotel,
the Kyodo Tsushin Media Tower and Annex (34 floors), and the new
headquarters building for Nippon Express (28 floors).
Redevelopment work in urban Tokyo included the design of three
high-rise towers in Higashi Shinagawa, a construction complex
in front of Akihabara Station incorporating an IT center, and
a high-rise residential tower. The Shiba Park Tower (25 floors),
which uses the Kajima Free-Plan High-Rise Housing System, was
completed in June 2001 and has drawn a favorable market response.
Several other group housing developments using the system are
currently on the drawing board.
Other design proposals of note included the following:

The Sony New Shibaura Development Project.
The commission was won by competition on the basis of a
proposal developed in collaboration with an external architect
to create an innovative work space for evolving work styles;

living environment by creating networks to support both
lifestyles and social interaction.

Technical development by the division focused on
a three- dimensional data base CAD system that supports data sharing
and integration at all stages of a project, from design to construction.
With the launch of the Production Center in April 2001, the division
began applying the technology to actual design work. In 2001,
the Production Center handled 30 assignments, and expects to handle
60 in 2002.
The division is also involved in a variety of environmentally
conscious design projects. These include the use of daytime sunlight
and natural ventilation to conserve energy; technology to reduce
energy use based on assessment of a building's life cycle; and
the use of large-panel terracotta tiles manufactured with low
carbon dioxide emission levels, to clad the exterior of a skyscraper,
Kajima Tower.
Kajima's design and technical capabilities were recognized with
a total of 54 external awards in 2001, including the Minister
of Construction's Award for Ecological and Energy Efficient Buildings.
