The hybrid HVAC system for Shiodome
Tower was developed to reduce energy consumption
1. Environmental Protection
As reductions in CO2 emissions are
mandated by the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, Kajima is working to define
what it can do to contribute further toward the common goal of protection the
global environment. One area is environment-conscious building design. Kajima
has been focusing on design proposals for energy-conserving buildings, such as
those that make ample use of natural light and fresh air, and incorporate energy-efficient
thermal storage air-conditioning systems.
Kajima made design proposals during the financial year to March
2005 for 66 major buildings, which employed energy-conservation standards that
were on average 20% greater than those currently required in Japan. Several energy-efficient,
environmentally-friendly buildings were generated from these proposals, such as
the Shiodome Tower and Seinan Gakuen Junior/Senior High School building.
Older buildings are also being made energy efficient with proper
equipment upgrades to manage energy use, such as the Tokyo East 21 building, which
has been systematically renovated in the 10 years since its completion. Kajima
continues to strive to build facilities that remain energy-efficient throughout
their life cycle.

chemicals management and ecosystem preservation initiatives please see the KAJIMA
Environmental Report 2004, posted online at (http://www.kajima.co.jp/prof/environment/index.html).

Earthquake
2. Disaster Prevention and Recovery
The terrible power of nature was vividly demonstrated during
2004, with major earthquakes in Niigata, Japan and the Indian Ocean, along with
tidal waves and typhoons. Kajima is pursuing research and development to develop
the technologies that will protect life and property, such as forecast simulators
for earthquakes, tidal waves and floods, along with warning systems, earthquake-proofing
reinforcement, structural response controls, and seismic control technologies.
In the event of a disaster, however, it is essential not only to undertake restoration
work quickly, but also to ascertain the underlying factors involved so as to ensure
that similar damage from such a disaster is not repeated. Kajima will continue
to utilize its technologies and capabilities to implement measures to protect
society from natural disasters.

3. Partnership with Local Communities
Kajima places great importance on communication and cooperation
with the local communities where its construction projects are located. Along
with organizing site visits for projects throughout Japan, Kajima participated
in a popular construction site visitation program organized by the Japan Civil
Engineering Contractors' Association, Inc. Visits to sites of building and civil
engineering projects such as these foster understanding of the construction business
among residents in the community. Kajima also offers activities for children,
such as visits to the Kajima Technical Research Institute, and environmental education
classes.

4. Contributions to Society
Kajima has traditionally shared its success in the form of
sponsorship for cultural activities. It operates a publishing business (Kajima
Institute Publishing) aimed at recording the development of culture, a technology
movie company (Kajimavision Productions), a large-scale bookstore (Yaesu Book
Center), as well as manages an academic foundation, an arts foundation, and a
peace research institution. As "the company that builds for the next century,"
Kajima will continue to contribute to society, equally through its business operations
and directly.
