Kajima Wins the 31st New York Japan Club Baseball Tournament

The championship game of the 31st New York Japan Club Baseball Tournament was held on July 29, again this year at the Staten Island Yankee Stadium, the home field of the New York Yankees' minor league team. Kajima U.S.A. Inc. (KUSA) defeated PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) by a score of 4 to 2, winning the tournament for the second consecutive year.

This baseball tournament was established in 1976 to commemorate the U.S. bicentennial. Teams consist of members of Japanese corporations and their families in the United States, with the contest aiming to foster Japan--U.S. friendship through sports. Twenty-four teams participated this year, with KUSA taking part for the past 17 years. Kajima's team reached the final following wins over JTB International, Inc., Tokio Marine Management, Inc., and Mizuho Corporate Bank, Ltd.

In the final game, KUSA took a two-run lead in the top of the first inning, with PWC answering with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. KUSA scored two additional runs in the top of the fourth inning, and showing a tight defense went on to achieve its second victory. The series Most Valuable Player (MVP), for the second year in a row, was pitcher Taishi Katayama, who single-handedly pitched all four games of the tournament.

Kajima (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. successfully completed this sizable project at an incredible speed. The two-story, reinforced concrete structure has a total floor area of approximately 55,000 square meters (590,000 square feet). The building sits on two different ground formation levels, with a vertical height difference of about 6.5 meters (21 feet). Parking lots for 1,100 vehicles were provided on the roof of the complex and in the surrounding area. Kajima (Malaysia) managed to complete the work in five and half months and made it ready for government inspection. More than 90% of the 75 tenant stores were opened during the "soft opening" of the complex on June 15, 2006. Kajima also coordinated and provided attendance to all the tenants during the tenants' interior works.

AEON conducts a proactive program of social contributions, including establishing a charity fund. AEON also takes an environmentally conscious approach and plants trees as part of the landscaping. AEON Taman Equine held a tree planting ceremony on May 27. Approximately 800 people comprising students, local authorities and AEON's vendors were invited to participate in the lively event and plant 4,000 trees.

With the growth of the Malaysian economy, many more large-scale commercial complexes are expected to be built. The success of this project is extremely significant for the future of Kajima (Malaysia).

Generating Energy from Shochu: The Kirishima Shuzo METAKLES Project

Construction is currently underway on Japan's largest recycling plant for the lees left from distilling potato-based shochu spirits, being built for the major alcohol producer Kirishima Shuzo Co., Ltd.

Shochu is a type of distilled liquor made from grains or potatoes, popular in Japan and currently undergoing a boom, mainly among the younger generation. The process for producing shochu involves the distillation of the moromi, the alcohol fermenting mixture, from which the product is pressed, leaving the lees as a byproduct. In the case of potato-based shochu, the volume of lees generated is twice that of the liquor itself. With the recent shochu boom, production volumes have risen, as has the volume of lees generated. The majority of these lees are spread on fields, dumped in the sea, dried to make animal feed, or incinerated. The fact that these methods are either forms of environmental pollution or require the burning of fossil fuels has become a major issue.

The recycling plant for potato-based shochu lees Kajima is constructing in Miyazaki Prefecture will recover biogas energy through methane fermentation of approximately 400 tons of shochu lees per day. At the same time, it will purify the shochu lees to a level where they can be discharged through the sewer system. This will substantially reduce the volume of fossil fuel consumed.

The recycling technology that makes this plant possible is the fixed-bed, high-temperature methane fermentation system METAKLES. It uses high-temperature methane fermentation bacteria to efficiently break down kitchen garbage and other organic wastes, generating biogas. This biogas can be used to generate heat, electricity, or can be used directly as a natural gas, and is being viewed as a new energy source for the recycling era.

The new plant will use the biogas generated as a source of heat for drying during the production process. We are also studying ways to use it as the energy for shochu production in the future.
