The head office building of a comprehensive energy service company was designed to consolidate the offices scattered throughout Sapporo and establish a functional and efficient business system. The low-rise portion of the façade is largely transparent and open to the cityscape, and the transparent ratio is gradually lowered as the level rises to allow the internal activities to flow outward with vitality and liveliness, while also blending in with the snowy landscape. The office aims to stimulate communication with workplaces equipped with “engawa” (traditional verandas) and internal stairs. In addition, disaster prevention and supply functions are reinforced through the use of a seismic vibration control structure and seismic isolation floors. In the basement floor, a large-scale distributed gas engine CGS with independent operating function is installed to supply electricity and heat to the building, electricity to the entire Hokkaido, and heat to the central area of Sapporo (via DHC plant), which is expected to lower carbon emissions and enhance the city’s resilience.
