Waseda University Toyama Campus #33
Waseda University Toyama Campus #33

This edifice stands on the site of the former Building 33, which was designed by alumnus Togo Murano. Ascending from the main gate and passing through the pilotis of Building 31, one is drawn through the courtyard toward the new building—positioned to inherit the existing campus layout. Responding to the needs of an educational and research institution, and requirements for flexibility and long life, the project pursued a consistently rational architecture within a complex rebuilding process. The result is a high degree of design–function integration. The flow lines on the first and second floors are bright and open, fitting in with the freedom of the courtyard and encouraging communication. With low story height, the upper floors have excellent amenity. While inheriting the spirit of its predecessor, the new building aims to inspire the next wave of creativity.
