Henn Na Hotel・West Arm
Henn Na Hotel・West Arm

This property’s Japanese-derived name suggests that the hotel will be ever-changing. Following the first-stage East Arm (third-party designed), which opened in summer 2015, the West Arm opened in March 2016. The latter’s main feature is the use of a Kyushu-made cedar cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure. This takes advantage of wood’s superior thermal insulation, earthquake resistance, and workability, while contributing to the revitalization of the domestic forestry industry. The plan successfully cleared a range of legal hurdles before lumber can be used as a structural material in a project such as this. In addition, responding to the challenge of wishing to create a world-class and environmentally sustainable hotel, the room entry system uses facial recognition technology, room lighting is controlled by both motion sensors and a voice-recognition robot, and the hotel uses a solar-powered, hydrogen-based, autonomous energy supply system.
