Musashino Clean Center

This was a renewal project for Musashino City’s 33-year-old waste incineration plant. Owing to its location next to city hall and surrounded by residential neighborhoods, the goal of the project’s design was to create a building that would not look like a waste incineration plant. By adjusting the layout of the plant’s machinery and constructing part of the building underground, the above-ground height was kept to within 15m, meaning that the scale blends well with the residential setting. The overall result is a clean, rectangular shape and a neat appearance. Terracotta louvers and greenery on the walls express the area’s history as a wooded area, and the façade contributes to realizing the design theme. A route for visitors to tour the plant was included, and a range of technologies were employed to prevent leakage of odors and noise pollution.
