Eisai Tsukuba Knowledge Center

The client brief for this project states Eisai's aims: "To stimulate enhanced knowledge exchange among researchers, leading to accelerated creation of superior pharmaceuticals with globally recognized value." Kajima proposed a facility encompassing three principal spaces: (1) Knowledge Hall, where presentations can be made to over 500 researchers; (2) Cross Café, where researchers may browse the latest research journals, converse, and have light meals; and (3) Soyaku Room, for small-group discussions. Knowledge Hall provides a space free of internal pillars, as its curtain wall mullion also functions as a steel-reinforced column. The design evokes the image of intellectual athletes being lauded for their research breakthroughs. Similar in shape to Rome's Coliseum, the hall's amphitheater is ellipsoidal in shape. Ellipsoids connecting competitors with an audience have been an important architectural motif in both the East and West through the ages.
