Albion Shirokane Education Center
Albion Shirokane Education Center

This building on Meguro-dori was constructed as a training center for a cosmetics company. In order to help preserve the living environment of the surrounding residential area, the size of the windows and other openings was limited, and a low-rise design was selected to prevent the structure from appearing oppressive. In exchange, an inner patio was excavated that extends all the way down to the basement floor. This patio allows natural light to penetrate the various rooms, and an interactive atmosphere is created within the facility by a transparent facade through which trainee and instructor can make eye contact with one another. The materials for the front facade were carefully selected to reflect the refinement that characterizes the Shirokane area, as well as evoke the white chalk cliffs of Dover, from which the company derives its name. The entry area at the bottom of the structure is horizontally wide but not very high, and is designed to allow passersby to glimpse the activities going on within.
