Gunma Hospital

This 465-bed psychiatric hospital was a full-renewal project. Normally, the site used for an existing facility is utilized as a parking lot or put aside for future buildings, but in this case the client requested that it be developed as a garden for use by patients and staff. It is sometimes said that in psychiatric hospital, the building is the most important therapeutic tool. The English garden developed through close dialogue with the client includes a clock tower and large arena roof as landmark features, creating both a relaxing haven for patients and a unique therapeutic space. With regard to universal design principles, the new facilities are not only barrier free but also have a wide variety of features that serve the needs of patients with reduced cognitive capacities. The design process included the implementation of surveys targeting patients and staff.
