JWES Building

The Japan Welding Engineering Society (JWES) has a mission to conduct research and education related to welding, and the JWES Building is its headquarters. Although welding technology is an essential part of a building, it is normally covered up and cannot be seen. In contrast, this project makes the steel structure visible, thereby expressing the building's identity as a leading center for welding technology. This structure functions as both a honeycomb damper—absorbing the energy transmitted during an earthquake—and a rationalized frame. The seismic damper forms the main expression of the steel structure. The seismic damping exterior wall developed for the front facade absorbs energy from exterior steel H-beam rocking during an earthquake, while the interior also features an effective array of damping mechanisms. The building's artwork and signs also utilize welding, creating a space that emphasizes the importance of the technology.
