This centenary renewal project for Sugamo Gakuen Junior and Senior High School opens a new chapter in the school’s history, while retaining the campus’s abundant greenery. With the grounds located in central Tokyo and surrounded by residential areas, the project was undertaken in four phases over three-and-a-half years: from the fall of 2012 to spring 2016. As far as possible, construction had to allow students to continue attending classes. Utilizing the limited available land, the project comprised three standard classroom blocks, one special-purpose classroom block, and a gymnasium. The design includes open bridges linking the buildings and, adjacent to the classroom zone, there is an entrance area allowing students to enjoy close-up views of the changing seasons and tree-lined areas. Lumber from the trees that had to be felled to make way for construction was used in the buildings’ interiors.
