Hosted the 28th Kajima Foundation for the Arts Prizes

  • Promotion of academia, culture, and art

On May 19, 2022, the 28th Kajima Foundation for the Arts Prizes were held at the Kajima KI Building (Minato-ku, Tokyo), hosted by the Kajima Foundation for the Arts (led by Chairperson Kimiko Kajima).

These Prizes are held every year to recognize outstanding work in art history research. This Prize program has been enhanced this year with the establishment of the new " Excellence Prize" to recognize people who have achieved research results at a level that is second only to winners of the Foundation Prize. Winners were given a certificate and an additional prize (1,000,000 yen for a Foundation Prize and 500,000 yen for an Excellence Prize) before they were given the opportunity to give a presentation on their findings. This year's Foundation Prizewinners were Motoko Okui (Part-time Lecturer, Kyoto City University of Arts) for her research titled "Study on Ushi-zu (Bulls), Drawn by Tawaraya Sotatsu and Inscribed by Karasumaru Mitsuhiro," and Shinsuke Niikura (Curator, Keio University Art Center) for his research titled "The Creation of Multiple-Viewpoints in Michelangelo's Hercules and Cacus: the Development from his Drawings of Hercules and Antaeus and the Relation Between the Concept and the Placement of the Sculpture." This year's Excellence Prize winners were Risa Murata (Curator, Akita Senshu Museum of Art) for her research titled "Study on Ainu-themed Paintings by Hirafuku Suian: Revolving Around Preceding Works and Relationship with His Contemporary Literary Figures," and Keiko Imai (Chief Curator, Pola Museum of Art) for her research titled "Creation Process Hidden in Picasso's Blue Period Paintings." These winners were selected from a total of 63 research projects that received grants in 2019.
