Hosted the SD Review 2022

  • Promotion of academia, culture, and art

The SD Review 2022, the 40th Exhibition of Winning Architectural Drawings and Models, hosted by Kajima Institute Publishing Co., Ltd. (a member of the Kajima Group), took place at Daikanyama Hillside Terrace (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) from September 16 through 25, 2022. The event attracted a record-setting number of over 3,100 visitors during the exhibition period.

This event was originally launched in 1982, proposed by the architect Fumihiko Maki, to "show, through architectural drawings and models, the thought processes that help designers to form clear concepts." This exhibition is open to all kinds of applicants, and it showcases drawings, models, and other materials from finalist works that are either at the design stage (planned to be implemented) or the construction stage, selected from a wide range of architectural, outdoor space, and interior works.

For the 40th SD Review, twelve works were selected from among 167 applicants from both inside and outside Japan. The panel of judges consisted of Manabu Chiba (Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo), Yasutaka Konishi (Professor, Musashino Art University), Masahiro Harada (Professor, Shibaura Institute of Technology), and Chie Konno (Associate Professor, Kyoto Institute of Technology), joined by Fumihiko Maki as Advisor, and the architect Kengo Kuma, a new Advisor.

After the second examination meeting, a gathering of people involved in the review was held with about 50 participants in total, including the finalists. The jury members and Kengo Kuma commented about their overall impressions of the applicant works among other topics. Following this, time was allocated for socializing, in which participants looked at the works and held discussions about design.

Later on, winners of the four prizes, including the Maki Prize and Kajima Prize, will be selected from among the finalists exhibited in the SD Review 2022 and will be announced in "SD 2022," scheduled to be issued this coming December.
