This addition and renewal project integrated the client’s Osaka research functions into its Tsukuba facility, with the aim of strengthening its new drug discovery capabilities. Building 5received a full interior makeover while retaining the existing frame and exterior. The newly added Building 10 has ample ceiling height, a wide span, and a mechanical balcony, all of which features ensure flexibility and, by extension, the sustainability of the structure. The building features earthquake-resistance and facility redundancy, to ensure the stability of its research functions. Researchers’ offices have floor-to-ceiling, double-glaze windows facing onto green space, while the underfloor air conditioning system creates a comfortable, energy-efficient environment. The corridor connecting the office and laboratory zones encourages communication among users, and stimulates research activities.
