The project consisted of rebuilding the research building and renovation of the headquarter building for a food company. The site is its birthplace in Noda, Chiba Pref., surrounded by an unchanged townscape with traditional exterior walls and warehouses. In response to the environment, the research center is a low-rise building with multi-span gable roofs. The permanent laboratories are consolidated on the first floor, and the second floor contains communal functions, such as free address offices, conference rooms, and a café. The multiple points connecting the floors vertically, such as stairways, atriums, and communication areas, are arranged in a planar checkerboard layout creating proximity among workers three-dimensionally. An innovative platform ensuring comfort and safety is realized by natural ventilation and lighting simulation managing the environmental performance, lighting control devices including a circadian lighting system and daylight sensor control, and structural seismic isolation.
