Kubota, which operates a global business focused on agricultural machinery, constructed this center to strengthen its R&D capabilities in newly emerging Asian economies. The project comprised four building zones—research offices, workshops, bench test facilities, and car parks—along with an outside test course. The research offices include balconies, all with vertical latticework, that serve multiple functions. They help reduce the amount of direct sunlight that penetrates the facility and ensure the privacy and security of those using the facility. At the same time they provide rest and meeting spaces; an evacuation route; maintenance space; and, on the first floor, passageway eaves. On the workshop side of the research offices is a two-story, glass-walled communication axis. This space is designed to encourage interaction among researchers, with the ultimate goal of promoting creativity and speed among the diverse research staff.
