This is the first manufacturing plant in Thailand for the NGK Insulators Group, which has the leading global market share for ceramic automotive exhaust gas purification catalysts. Located on the outskirts of Bangkok, in an area of soft ground just 0.7m above sea level, it was necessary to protect the factory from floods and prevent it from sinking. Kajima proposed and built a raised-floor factory, inspired by the design of traditional Thai houses. In the production area, which includes a large-capacity kiln, the entire under-floor space serves as an air-supply chamber. The high-efficiency displacement ventilation system, which uses the gravity differential of the floor outlets and roof exhaust, enhances the internal environment. Since no air conditioning is used, the design contributes to energy saving. The office and welfare blocks incorporate wide eaves and cloisters to mitigate the sun’s heat.
