Sarukurayama Brewery
Sarukurayama Brewery

The damp air blowing from the Sea of Japan hits the Three Mountains of Echigo, including the sacred Mount Hakkai, turning into snow that reaches over three meters in mid-winter. As with the sake Hakkaisan, the water used for brewing is “Raiden-sama no Shimizu,” the spring water from Mount Hakkai, which is a true blessing of nature. Beautiful cedar and deciduous broad-leaved forests spread across the surrounding woodlands. The brewery in the corner of the forest blends in with the mountains behind it to become a part of the mountainous village’s landscape. The roof is at a 26.5-degree angle matching the foundation underneath, aligning the mound and the roof, all buried under the snow in winter, with only the tip of the triangular gable wall peeking out from the surface. The sharp form of the building is linked inseparably to the land, corresponding to the majestic briskness of nature.
