Since opening in 1896, the Misono-za has been central to Nagoya’s theater culture. This project replaces the structure with a large complex, comprising a 1,300-seat theater, shops and restaurants on the lower levels; and 304 residential units from the 5th to 40th levels. Creating a vibrant area within the city, the new theater inherits from the Misono-za distinctive design elements: the namako wall—a white grid on black slate; as well as use of vermillion and wood grain. Hence, the new building features the optical illusion of latticework, a large vermillion-colored staircase, and plain wood finishes. The residences fuse traditional beauty and refinement, to help create next-generation lifestyles. Community and environmental enhancements include public spaces, a rooftop garden, and rainwater runoff control. Having helped revitalize one of Nagoya’s key areas, the development is a cherished part of the city scene.
