This project, to rebuild a 35-year-old kindergarten building, will unfold in stages so that the current facility can be used during construction.
We have preserved the U-shaped layout of the original building, but the new orientation will enable the children to see only sky and greenery. A horizontal layout will make all areas of the school directly accessible from the schoolyard, while the one-story wooden structure's large single roof and wide hallways will merge with the surrounding covered veranda, so that classrooms and schoolyard merge into a single space.
The entrance hall facing the street incorporates a ramp to the playground, and from the street one can see through the hall to the playground and woods behind. There are bookshelves along the ramp walls to remove all distinction between reading and play, making the ramps more like another room than passageways.
