This project is an R&D center for an integrated chemicals manufacturer. The client’s competitive strength derives from its high technological capabilities and its broad product lineup, including chemical products, functional film and electronic materials. To coincide with the company’s 80th anniversary, its four dispersed research sites were integrated into this new facility, designed to deepen cross-disciplinary linkages to foster innovation. The site’s distinctive features are its gentle slope, reminiscent of an alluvial fan, and the strong axial relationship it has with mountains and the sea. A stair-cased atrium was created along this axis, with laboratories and offices laid out on both sides. Surrounding the atrium are various meeting spaces, a display space and library, while high sidelights deliver gentle natural light. Against the backdrop of Toyama’s rich mountain environment, the facility design seeks to foster the birth of new ideas.
