This small housing complex situated on the coast in Hayama, Kanagawa, has just five units, four single-story residences and one duplex. Ocean-front property in this seaside resort-famous as the site of imperial retreats-is hard to obtain, and Kajima planned to make the most of this rare location, incorporating amenities ideal for an envisioned weekend-style getaway residence.
The site is atop a stone retaining wall facing the Sagami Bay. The building is designed to fit with the traditional low-rise private houses that dot the city of Hayama. The upper two residential floors of the three-story exposed reinforced concrete structure extend out on a cantilever, framing a view of the ocean from inside the units. Despite the reinforced concrete wall structure, the building has a wide span of about 14 meters (46 feet), allowing residents to fully enjoy the ocean-front view from the living room and bath.
