This renovation project was for the campus facilities area of Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, which recently marked its 130th anniversary. To handle with the increase in the campus population following the adoption of a six-year program, the project included refurbishing of existing buildings as student support facilities, and doubling the capacity of the cafeteria to seat 1,200 people. Rather than stand-alone buildings, the design exhibits an integrated silhouette. In order to emphasize as much as possible the charm of the site with its woodland preserve behind the building, and to provide a comfortable space for the many students, the two-story cafeteria was altered to match the sloping land, and connected with a wide stairway. Brick walls were also used in keeping with the campus design code, ensuring the continuity of the space both inside and out.
