This building is the new headquarters and research facility of a healthcare equipment manufacturer. Situated near to JR Katsuragawa Station in Kyoto, it occupies part of a redevelopment on the former site of a brewery. The project focused on creating "a new facility that would help individual workers to maximize their creativity." It comprises two buildings separated by a courtyard—a six-story high-rise building with office and laboratory zones and a two-story low-rise facility containing a showroom and employee cafeteria. The high-rise block features a central atrium that functions as a communication space. Another key aspect of the project is its many innovative, environment-friendly, CO2-reducing technologies, which were employed through collaborative development with the client. These include a window-opening navigation system of natural ventilation that promotes user participation, a solar cell-based internal mini-smart grid, and task and ambient air conditioning that uses thermal sensors.
