This project called for the creation of an event space with two distinct functions—a 500-seat facility for sea lion shows and a 1,000-seat concert hall. Although the task initially seemed insurmountable, the design and engineering team responded by proposing a space with a wondrous amount of variation. Simplicity was retained by utilizing general-purpose technology in four transformative systems: (1) a removable floor with 500 seats lifts up to reveal the sea lion show pool; (2) a wall that retracts from both sides to reveal the event stage; (3) windows behind the audience seating fully fold away to provide an uninterrupted connection with the lawn area; and (4) a large electrically retractable wall behind the stage provides a large opening onto the outdoor event square. This unique, flexible space opened in spring 2014 to coincide with Yomiuri Land’s 50th anniversary.
