This project utilizes land formerly occupied by an apartment building for women. The area was zoned for commercial and residential use, but long remained vacant due to development restrictions. To regenerate this high-quality central-city lot, the project needed to address the issue of sunlight access for the residences to the north, and how to attain maximum utilization. Hence, the unusual building form takes into account the sun’s projection and rhythm. This provides the client with maximum value, while blending with the surrounding environment and giving the landscape a new identity. In addition to featuring distinctive precast concrete slabs and tiles, the sashes and glass were fitted in the factory, while finished, painted components were brought to the site. Although the building footprint is small, it has openings on all sides and the vertical slits provide a varied view.
