This project was a private finance initiative (PFI) to effectively utilize a national asset. The site is located in the Shinonome Canal Court zone, and the building’s position, volume and greenery were designed in conformity with the zone’s design code. The building also acts as the focal point of a network of green pedestrian pathways crisscross the entire area, connecting a Harumi Avenue—a key thoroughfare—and Tatsumi Canal. Despite facing onto the busy Harumi Avenue, a wooden pedestrian promenade contributes to an attractive landscape while evoking the abundant greenery of the waterfront area. Although the site, is split-level, through adherence to universal design principles and the implementation of other features, including the installation of benches and other street furniture, enables the area to become almost barrier-free. This results in an accessible, relaxed, people-friendly outside space.
