The client operates a nationwide chain of specialty produce stores and is also involved in agricultural production. Japanese agriculture faces a myriad problems, so a key aim of the client was to increase the public’s knowledge of vegetables and agriculture. Hence, in the heart of Kyoto, it embarked on an unprecedented project to build an integrated food-themed facility to communicate Yaoichi’s business model and propose a vision for Japan’s agriculture, food distribution and meals. In addition to produce-retailing and restaurants, the building features a mini-farm on its third floor where seasonal vegetables are grown in 60cm-deep soil. Customers can enjoy the freshly harvested produce, which is processed and sold on the premises. By facilitating dialogue between food producer, retailer and consumer, Yaoichi is creating an environment where people can experience the importance of agriculture and enjoy the richness of food.
