Since its establishment in 1949 as the first technical research institute in Japan’s construction industry, Kajima Technical Research Institute has served as the core of Kajima’s technological excellence. We have consistently and boldly responded to the evolving needs of society in each era.
Innovative technologies that have contributed to solving social challenges and creating new value—such as those for super high rise buildings, nuclear power plants, large scale infrastructure, and seismic control—are the result of the continuous challenges and dedicated efforts of our predecessors. Their aspirations and spirit remain firmly alive within us today.

Today, we face complex and long term social challenges, including population decline, the realization of a decarbonized society, the increasing severity and complexity of natural disasters, aging infrastructure, contributions to nature positive initiatives, and the transition to a circular economy. In addition, construction sites are confronted with urgent issues such as improving productivity, securing skilled personnel, and ensuring safety.
To address these challenges, our Institute pursues solutions and value creation through technological innovation that goes beyond conventional approaches. Our research and development (R&D) activities are organized into six fields: Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Lifecycle, Well Being and Smart Buildings, Green and Circular Economy, Automation and Digitalization, and Construction and Structural Methods. Across these fields, we promote interdisciplinary R&D through collaboration among diverse professionals.

Although technological innovation is advancing at an unprecedented pace and the future is increasingly difficult to predict, there is no doubt that rapidly evolving AI technologies will become a key driver—not only supporting individual problem solving efforts, but also transforming the very way R&D is conducted and redefining the role of researchers.
At our Institute, we are committed to developing core personnel capable of executing R&D by fully leveraging AI and other digital technologies. At the same time, by utilizing large scale experimental facilities, we pursue grounded and reliable R&D that iterates between physical “facts” and digital “predictions.” Through this approach, we deepen our core technologies and create valuable new ones.

From a global perspective, we are strengthening our international research network and promoting open innovation, with KaTRIS (Kajima Technical Research Institute Singapore)—a pioneering overseas research base in the construction industry—at its center. By acquiring knowledge through overseas projects, conducting joint research with international institutions, and collaborating with startups and partners from diverse industries, we accelerate not only the response to regional needs but also the global deployment of technologies and their reintegration into Japan.
