Creating new value for our customers

Since the establishment of the Japanese construction industry’s first technical research institute in 1949, Kajima has consistently looked toward the future, pioneering new technologies across various fields, including those used in the construction of skyscrapers, nuclear power plants, long-span bridges, and deep tunnels. Kajima Technical Research Institute embodies the pioneering spirit and challenge-driven mindset cultivated and passed down through this rich history.

Today, we face a rapidly changing social environment marked by significant challenges: demographic shifts such as declining birthrates and an aging population, large-scale natural disasters driven by climate change and seismic activity, pandemics, and the accelerating pace of digital transformation. These factors define the VUCA era—an age of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity—making future predictions exceedingly difficult.

In such circumstances, businesses are tasked with addressing social issues, such as those tackled in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while ensuring their own sustainable growth. Guided by our corporate philosophy, of "continually advancing our business operations and contributing to society," Kajima has identified seven materiality priorities closely aligned with our business, aiming for sustainable growth alongside society.

At Kajima Technical Research Institute, we strive to address social challenges such as environmental and energy issues, disaster prevention and mitigation, and the maintenance and renewal of infrastructure. By integrating advanced technologies like AI, ICT, and robotics with traditional fields, we are also pursuing the realization of new value in areas such as smart buildings and smart cities.

The most pressing issue in the construction industry today is the shortage of skilled workers and securing future talent. To tackle this, we are focusing on mechanization, automation, and smart solutions as core strategies, aiming to achieve “factory-like site operations” in civil engineering and realize the “Kajima Smart Future Vision” in building construction. This involves advancing the digitalization of the entire construction process and creating platforms to consolidate and utilize diverse data to develop systems that enable seamless planning, decision-making, and control.

As customer demands shift from products to experiences, standalone hardware to integrated hardware-software services, and isolated technologies to comprehensive business models, open innovation—through collaboration and co-creation with universities, leading corporations, and startups—has become indispensable. At Kajima Technical Research Institute, we focus on developing talent capable of advancing cutting-edge digital technologies, particularly in the fields of AI and data science. At the same time, we promote diversity among our personnel, fostering an environment where dynamic, high-density communication between unique individuals sparks the creation of innovative ideas.

Our Singapore office, KaTRIS, collaborates with universities, government agencies, and local companies on joint research and projects. Moving forward, we remain committed to globally maximizing the value of our R&D efforts in addressing universal challenges.

Kajima Technical Research Institute upholds Kajima’s commitment to quality while carrying forward its DNA of embracing cutting-edge innovation. We remain dedicated to tackling the unpredictable and discontinuous challenges of our time. By fully leveraging our potential, we strive to remain a trusted partner for our clients and make meaningful contributions to society on a broad scale.
