This is a medical equipment manufacturer’s R＆D facility. In addition to the objectives of enhancing efficiency through the integration of facilities, and the establishment of a creative research and development center, a core theme of this project was to build a relationship with its host city, particularly given its prime location next to a major suburban railway station (Tokorozawa). Further, the relationship would need to strike a balance between communicating the company’s innovative spirit and ensuring research confidentiality. Thus the design of the standard floors focused on the improved amenity of the research space, under the theme of a light environment. Hence, the project realizes an open workplace, while also protecting privacy by fusing the architectural plan, structure and facility technologies. For example, the window area combines external louvers and sunlight-diffusing glass, while the ceiling system enhances the interior brightness.
