Oto no ha Café
Oto no ha Café

Serving organic vegetables grown on its own farm, this café is built of wood and faces Mejiro Avenue. The area is rich in natural and cultural features, including Tokyo Cathedral and the Chinzanso and Kodansha Noma Memorial Museum gardens. Since it is in a fire safety zone, the building would normally be clad in plasterboard, which would obscure the wooden structure. However, Kajima’s newly developed Fire Resistant (FR) wood—laminated cedar with a load-bearing layer containing fire retardant—has been used, and retains the flexibility and fragrance of natural lumber. The Kajima wood has been used in the center of the building for three independent columns and exposed beams, to provide a dynamic atrium. The wooden floor, ceiling and sashes, create a lavish interior, so that the café is in perfect harmony with the neighboring Kodansha Noma Memorial Museum gardens.
