This is a bio-medical drug production facility owned by a world-leading pharmaceutical group, and is located in one of Japan’s largest industrial parks. Approximately 20 years has elapsed since the facility first opened, and this project called for the renewal of three blocks—administration, quality management and welfare. Based on a concept of “safety, advanced risk management and energy efficiency,” the project integrates the aforementioned functions into one building. The new block connects to the site’s central passageway, and its façade is formed from a single, large frame. The different functions of the interior are expressed through variations in the façade, providing a fresh face for a new chapter in the facility’s history. While respecting and utilizing the existing structure, functions and appearance of the overall site, the new building incorporates seismic isolation based on the lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
