Keio University Hiyoshi Campus Fourth Building, Independence Wing

The Fourth Building Independence Wing at Hiyoshi was part of Keio University's 150th anniversary celebrations. The edifice is used for lectures and classes catering to some 10,000 students. As the focal point of the campus with 35 large and small learning spaces, its amenities capitalize on the site's elevation difference of approximately nine meters between lowest and highest points, and include the Hiyoshi Communication Lounge, which supports student activities; an avenue that connects town and campus; and an atrium through which students pass. The removal of a retaining wall that stood above the adjoining main road allowed the development of a 180m-long walkway and green area that add to the town's rich scenery. The building's exterior complements the rows of cherry and zelkova trees, while the atrium and avenue, with blended lines of sight, are designed to encourage natural interaction.
