Construction system through autonomous operation of construction vehicle machines
A4CSEL (Automated/Autonomous/Advanced/Accelerated Construction system for Safety, Efficiency, and Liability; “quad axel”) is a completely new construction production system that theoretically allows a single supervisor to operate as many vehicles construction machines as needed at the same time.
Unlike conventional unmanned construction through remote operation of construction vehicle machines or other methods, automated construction vehicle machines operate autonomously and automatically simultaneously to complete work when work data (when, where, what) is sent. This significantly saves manpower. In addition, because human workers do not operate construction vehicle machines, it can dramatically reduce work accidents related to construction vehicle machines, which account for most construction accidents. On top of that, stable construction quality is ensured because automatic machines reliably perform combinations of routine and repetitive operations reconfigured and standardized from qualitative on-site work that previously depended on skilled workers.
It can also optimize work procedures and combinations of machines for streamlined construction based on industrial engineering to find the operation that maximizes productivity. And A4CSEL achieves the best performance by optimizing everything including the construction management techniques for efficient and effective operation such as construction planning and control methods suitable for automatic operation. By dramatically improving safety and productivity in the field and stably providing high-quality infrastructure, A4CSEL realizes the construction site automation that Kajima is aiming for. This technology also allows for construction by a small number of workers or construction from a remote location and so is gathering attention as a desirable construction system in with-COVID-19 society.
Research is in progress to leverage the automation technology of A4CSEL in the space development field as well. We are working with JAXA on research and development to construct a manned exploration base, planned for the Moon and Mars, by applying the technologies that make up A4CSEL . The research so far shows the feasibility of base construction. We plan further advance research to realize a remote construction system through coordination between remote operations and autonomous control in the future.
Important Facts

Construction control room
World’s first technology for multiple construction vehicles machines that autonomously make decisions and perform automated construction when humans just send operating instructions from the control room.

Illustration of application of A4CSEL to dam construction work
Unlike conventional remote operations using remote controller or other equipment, multiple construction vehicles machines work autonomously and simultaneously when a single person gives operating instructions.

Illustration of construction of space exploration base
in joint research with JAXA
Covering the module with soil to shield it from meteorites and radiation.

Full-scale construction experiment facility "Seisho Experimental Field"
(Odawara, Kanagawa)
We opened the facility with an area of about 2 hectares (5 acres) for the purpose of research and development of Kajima's automated construction technology such as A4CSEL and production technologies.
