Following a tenure in Singapore, Mr. Oura served as president of Kajima Poland, Europe and as president of Kajima India. He assumed his current position in June 2020.
Please tell us about Kajima China.
In the mid-1980s, we opened liaison offices in Shanghai and Beijing. After China joined the WTO in 2001, Kajima established a local subsidiary in Shanghai in 2003 and gradually expanded our business area to include all of China.
We have acquired the highest-ranked, first-class qualification as a foreign-affiliated construction company, and provide various construction-related services throughout China to meet the needs of our clients including design, construction, construction management, and engineering. Our strengths lie in high value-added manufacturing facilities and facilities that require advanced engineering. In addition to design and construction, we also provide consulting services to local general contractors and developers.
What are Kajima China’s strengths?
Our aim is to become the No. 1 brand in China by engaging in high-quality production facilities, mainly in the field of pharmaceuticals, which require advanced technologies and planning. In the future, we plan to expand into information technology, data processing, and emerging raw materials, which are high-value-added industries like pharmaceuticals.
In recent years, demand for quality has been rising in tandem with the rapid development of the economy, and the number of enquiries from Chinese companies for technical consulting services has increased. We are also endeavoring to become the top brand in conceptual plan/schematic design and technical consulting services.
What initiatives are you undertaking to become the top brand in China?
Local and Japanese employees are working together to expand our business base.
The main initiatives are:
- Strengthening operations;
- Strengthening sales capabilities (in cooperation with various areas);
- Upskilling our employees and fostering leaders, and
- Enhancing and improving the personnel evaluation system.
In the near future, we are certain that China will become the world's largest construction market.
In order to respond to the continued growth of the market and future expansion of business segments, we intend to enable as many employees as possible - especially in the development of leaders - to exert leadership that balances independence, skill and judgment.

Kajima (China) has a vision for the future which local employees have driven called "Create the future and contribute to Chinese society through technology to become the top brand in China." The underpinning message is that there is no future if we continue to do the same as we’ve always done.
