Sow and nurture new seeds of business
while safeguarding the Chung-Lu brand built
by our clients.
Chairman and President
Following postings in Malaysia, the United States, and China, and the Overseas Operations Division of Kajima in Japan, Teiji Omata was appointed to his current position in 2018.
Please briefly introduce Chung-Lu Construction.
Kajima established a representative office in Taiwan in 1899 and constructed railways, power stations, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. Then in 1983, Kajima established a local subsidiary, Chung-Lu Construction Co., Ltd. Chung-Lu is involved in a broad array of construction projects including manufacturing facilities for Japanese companies, office buildings for local companies and high-rise condominiums, among others. The most distinguishing feature of Chung-Lu is that it takes full advantage of Kajima's technical capabilities / comprehensive strengths and pays close attention to building quality into every stage of the construction process. As a result, many clients come to Chung-Lu when they have difficult projects requiring complex construction, tight schedules and/or is demanding in terms of technical expertise and management capabilities.
How do you view Kajima’s long history in Taiwan?
Among all of Kajima's overseas subsidiaries, one could argue that Chung-Lu (or, Nakashika in Japanese) is one of the most powerful local brands. When clients award projects to us, they are purchasing our trusted brand, and time-tested tradition of performance which has lasted for 120 years.
In order to safeguard our know-how handed down to us by our predecessors and the deep connections we share with our many clients, we remain committed to quality and strive to ensure that each step is carefully executed. Doing what needs to be done without compromise, no matter the circumstances is the Chung-Lu way of “Monozukuri” or craftsmanship construction.
Please tell us more about Chung-Lu’s “craftsmanship construction”?
The result of our “craftsmanship” is a finite and tangible form, so we always create a project framework with the final form we want to achieve at project end in mind. Without knowing the final form, you will never know what you are making at any point in the process. Additionally, it must be built so that it remains problem-free for decades after completion. To achieve this, a building master plan and construction drawings which take the interplay between the construct, structural aspects, and MEP facilities into account are indispensable.
Within the Production System Reform Promotion Office, which was established in April 2019, we formed a new construction documents group and have begun consolidating construction drawings at the head office to maintain a higher level of quality control. These efforts will further enhance our competitiveness in the market.
How do you intend to show your employees where Chung-Lu is heading?
All our local employees may wonder if this company has a future. My role is to deliver a simple and easy-to-understand message to these employees about what I want this company to achieve in terms they can understand. What I tell them is that we’ll always tackle future challenges with new approaches and without adhering to old ways or approaches used in the past. The recent opening of the Production System Reform Promotion Office is a part of this new approach. We are determined to continually sow new seeds that all employees will grow together for the next 10 to 20 years.
